My journey into dogs began when I was only four. We had a little Maltese/poodle mix named Betsy, and she looked just like a miniature sheepdog. I used to brush her, and dress her in pj’s. I’d put her in a stroller and take her everywhere with me. Dogs have always been an important part of my life.
Later, when I was growing up and living on my own, I got my first German Shepherd. I bred and showed shepherds for nearly 15 years. In the back of my mind, however, was always the desire to own an Afghan Hound. I was a hairdresser and the idea of working with such a long, luxurious coat played with my imagination.
I waited until I moved to a large country property, in February 2000, to get my first Afghan. Her name was Candyland Tiramisu (Tira). I proceeded to take her out to dog shows and finished her Canadian title quickly. After I finished her title, I began to research prospective studs for breeding. I ended up breeding her to CH Mylakhan Heattaker Candyland (Cosmos) and produced a great litter. I kept back one bitch to begin my breeding program. Diva finished her championship and when she was two years old I imported the three-year-old Australian Champion, Tahkira Go To Hell (Leo) from Birgit Ferguson, who runs Tahkira Afghans in Australia. I can't thank her enough for sending Leo to us, he arrived and just stole our hearts. After Leo came to us, he earned his Canadian and American championships as well. He truly is an amazing dog, both in conformation and temperament.
I truly believe that in order to breed happy, healthy puppies, you need to begin with sound, healthy dogs. My experience with German Shepherds has taught me the importance of doing extensive health clearances on both sire and dam. I make sure all health checks are done on my dogs before I breed.
I strive to work with my owners and offer whatever help I can. I enjoy mentoring new owners who want to try their hand at showing their afghan, and have helped many owners/handlers get started in the show world. I stress to all of my owners that if something ever happens, and they need help with their dog, they can come to me at any time. I want to be involved with the Afghans I breed for life, and keep in touch with all of my owners. I believe that a breeder should be responsible for every puppy they bring into the world, and that includes taking them back if the owner’s situation changes.
I hope to make many new friends, and help them find the right Afghan for them. Come and meet the Tokabout crew, we would love to welcome you to our family.
